If you are a gamer, you might know that throughout last generation of consoles, many game companies went bankrupt as a consequence of price increases in video game development. During last generation of gaming, and still during this new generation, game companies have tried increasing their sales by adding in-game purchases and by selling special editions of their game titles.
It is understandable for companies to release new content for their games in order to create more profits and keep creating more games, but, are they abusing it?
In the past, there have been controversies about some of this “new” extra content as many game developers were selling content that was already in the game disc as “additional” content. This was the case, long ago, with Street Fighter X Tekken as Capcom locked some of the game’s characters behind a pay-wall.
Although "new" characters were already included (but locked) in the disc, gamers had to pay a small cash amount if they wanted to unlock them. Because of this, many gamers now consider that paying $60 for a game feels already incomplete.
Nowadays, the special edition of video games seems to be gaining popularity between game developers. Special editions are those in which game developers release a game, then release the same game with additional content at a higher cost. Some gamers believe that a portion of the video game was "cut" to later be sold as extra content.
The Collector's Edition versions seems to be quite popular as well. A lot of companies are releasing collector's editions that includes, in many cases, statues and other goodies for a premium tag price.
Personally, most of the time I buy the vanilla version of the games I wish to play, but I have known some people who buy a lot of DLC, and others who can't resist buying the most expensive edition of the game.

as someone who's trying to work in the industry myself. I've experienced the cost of development and believe me even indie titles are no longer cheap to produce. There are some instances of abuse. But, more or less generating extra revenue so a developer can keep putting out good IPs is not a bad thing and it gives those that would prefer to support the devs an extra option of income. DLC is as stated and can't be otherwise produced, all DLC is produced post product. In the case of the infamous ME3 day 1 DLC. it was produced post production and released to MOST consumers for almost no extra charge provided you caught up with the hype and bought a collector's edition which covered the extra 10$ cost and included goodies.
